Let’s bake some Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes and skip the parades.
At Heron PR, we love celebrating. St. Patrick’s Day is no exception. We have a Heron, a Flanigan, a Duffy, and a Hughes.
Enough said. I have always loved St. Patrick’s Day, but the MAJOR drawback of the holiday is dealing with crowds of people like this guy. Yet, as the saying goes, “There are only two kinds of people in the world: The Irish and those who wish they were.”
Here’s how to get into St. Patrick’s Day spirit minus the pub crawls and parades:
- Plan a party with these cheerful tips from OH HAPPY DAY! (for a kid-friendly affair) and Apartment Therapy (for an adult soirée).
- Bake some Irish Soda Bread…or {much} better yet, Irish Car Bomb cupcakes. I can’t wait to try copying this adorable rainbow-themed breakfast idea and making festive cocktails like the Irish Buck.
- Put on Irish Heartbeat by Van Morrison and The Chieftains to immediately put yourself and anyone else in a blissful mood. Is there anyone alive who can resist the charm of Celtic music?
- At St. Clement School we used to make Leprechaun Ladders ever year: a paper chain of shamrocks that we taped to our desks that was climbed by a treat-delivering leprechaun {a.k.a. baby powder sprinkles to look like footprints} in the night. For ideas on other whimsical St. Patrick’s Day crafts, this blog is full of easy, colorful ideas.
- Watch THE QUIET MAN of course! Although it isn’t set in Ireland, IN AMERICA, about an Irish family in New York City, is another beautiful and heartbreaking must-see.
- Read some classic Irish literature. The list of influential writers with ties to the Emerald Isle goes on and on, but my favorite book of all time is the story of an Irish immigrant family: A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN by Betty Smith. It is a brilliant novel worth reading more than once and way more uplifting than James Joyce.
- Check out the Chicago River dyed green. This is by far the best that river ever looks!
Sláinte!
