Being in the theatre is something I have become very familiar with as a performer in school productions, so not being backstage is something unfamiliar to me.

As my first week at Heron Agency came to a close, I was lucky enough to leave the office with my team members and head over to the Mercury Theatre where The Bardy Bunch rehearsal was in full swing. Sitting down in our seats we laughed, smiled, and enjoyed every minute of the sneak peek that we got to see. The cast was dismissed for their lunch break, and this is when I got to see the true collaboration and communication take place.

It is not just publicists’ emails, phone calls, and texts that open a show, but meetings with the producer(s), directors, and whomever else may be involved. Specifics about opening night, social media and marketing details were discussed before we headed out. But we were not heading back to the office, but, out to display flyers for the show in local shops and restaurants around the theater. As I returned to the agency that afternoon, I had a greater understanding that PR is not just about responding to emails and requests in a timely manner, but meeting face-to-face with people and really pushing to get your clients name and/or show out there. This was something that can’t be easily taught or shown in a classroom. I am so thankful to be spending the fall at Heron Agency!
